Vedanta has announced its first ore being produced from their brand-new Gamsberg operation in the Northern Cape.
Environmental regulations for the development of this zinc mine are particularly restrictive owing to the geographical coincidence of the ore body with a ‘biodiversity hot spot’.
Vedanta complied and delivered, thereby showing great commitment and manifesting themselves as a part of the change of paradigm currently observable in parts of the mining sector.
Over the 30 years to come, the Gamsberg mine will produce 214 Mt of ore to be shipped to Namibia for refining in a first stage, with the possibility of Vedanta setting up an own refinery at some point in the future.
