The 25th Anniversary Mining Indaba, which started today in Cape Town, promises to be bigger and better than previous years, thanks in no small part to its recent acquisition by London based ITE Group Plc. This year’s event sees the largest number of mining executives, junior miners and mining investors from around the world coming together for this critical deal-making forum.
This year’s Indaba sees His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa, Republic of South Africa, joined by His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo, President of Ghana, and 35 Mining Ministers along with many of the biggest names of the African mining industry. President Cyril Ramaphosa’s keynote speech will commence on Tuesday February 5, 2019 at 15:00 – 16:00 on the Main Stage.
President Ramaphosa, who became the leader of South Africa in February 2018, is a leading anti-apartheid activist, trade union leader and successful businessman. Since becoming President, he has embarked on a radical overhaul of South Africa’s economy as a priority for his leadership, with a strong focus on economic growth, youth employment, land reform and tackling social inequality. When he became President, one of his first announcements was to secure $100 billion of foreign investment for South Africa and over the last year has conducted several successful trade missions.
On the agenda for the first day at Mining Indaba 2019 was the Official Welcome and opening remarks from the Hon. Minister Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral Resources, Republic of South Africa.
Iman Rappetti is moderating panels on the Main Stage for most of day, with a key focus on ‘Charting a New Way Forwards for the African Mining Sector’. On the panel for that session, Cheryl Carlolus – Chairperson of Gold Fields, Hon. Minister for Mineral Resources in South Africa Gwede Mantashe, Mark Cutifani – Chief Executive of Anglo American, and George Cheveley – Portfolio Manager for Investec Asset Management.
One of the key events at Indaba is the Investment Battlefield where the hottest emerging mining projects pitch against each other to a panel of high-profile investors to be crowned the 2019 champion. These sessions can be fantastic learning experiences as you see the kind of questions investors want answers to when considering which projects to invest in.
New for this year at Mining Indaba is an upgraded Business Matchmaking portal with easy filtering and search functions provide you with targeted matches so you can spend more time having focused conversations. The new Investment Pavilion combines the VIP Investor Lounge and Junior Mining Showcase to provide even easier interaction and deal-making between investors and junior miners.
One of the pledges for this years conference is Women in Mining and the pledge to increase diversity with more women on this year’s agenda.
